Surf · Essaouira

The mellow side of the Atlantic

Inside the bay the swell arrives soft and slow, wrapping over the sandbanks in long, forgiving white water. That is why beginners stand up here on their first session rather than their fifth — and why our coaches stay in the water beside you.

How it works

Step by step

  1. 01

    Beach briefing

Reading the sets, the current and the sandbanks, then ten minutes of pop-up practice on the sand before you get wet.

  2. 02

    White water

Paddling out through the inside, catching your first broken waves, and learning to stay with the board instead of fighting it.

  3. 03

    Standing up

The pop-up, timed with the wave: knees, feet, eyes up. Most people are standing by the end of the first session.

  4. 04

    The green wave

Moving out to unbroken waves, choosing your line and your first turns, with the coach calling each set from the beach.

Surf is the cheapest way into board sports here, and the best warm-up for kite days — the wind usually builds in the afternoon, so mornings belong to the waves.
